Screenwriting : Grasping the mechanics by Brian Smith

Brian Smith

Grasping the mechanics

I'm just trying to get off square 1, and I need some training on the basic mechanics of screen writing, for example one idea I have, the opening scene would be all action with zero dialog, no idea how to make that happen.

Cheers Brian Smith, once you grab a few resources and study a bit you'll access the fairly simple Format;

then as you study further, you'll develop an understanding of the Form;

more deeply into it, you can invest the time to write a first rough-draft screenplay or two and become acquainted with the Craft;

and then finally a few scripts in you will have the Art in your hands.

Could take a year or ten but we're all on different stages of similar journeys (depending somewhat on whether you prefer to write for short form, feature, specific genres and distribution models, etc.).

Here's my list of helpful books in case you're interested, and of course there are many dozens of resources here on Stage 32, including the intensive Writers' Room with ongoing workshops to help you accelerate your progress and dive into your story ideas!

Best wishes for great accomplishments! I think opening sequence of action with zero dialogue is a great cinematic habit to get into.
