Introduce Yourself : Aspiring Screenwriter by Adam J Fernandes

Adam J Fernandes

Aspiring Screenwriter

I think a re-introduction is necessary.

I've been writing for more than a decade now. I've written 70 scripts (Shorts, features, and TV pilots.). I haven't had anything produced yet for more reasons than I care to explain here. I am always open to collaborations, and I look forward to working with anyone who needs an honest and fair ear.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Maurice Vaughan

70 scripts is beyond impressive, Adam J Fernandes!!! Are you working on script #71?

Adam J Fernandes

I have outlines and have started work on 71, 72, and 73. Ideas are never the problem. :)

Suzan Yumerova

Woow... need to hear your best tips FOR baby screenwriters :)

Maurice Vaughan

You're prepared, Adam J Fernandes. :D What genre is your next script?

Sam Sokolow

Hey Adam - great post and amazing that you’ve completed that many scripts!! So cool. What are your favorite genres to work in?

Adam J Fernandes

Maurice, one is in the Christian/Inspirational genre, one is a thriller, and the other is sci-fi.

Sam, I love writing in any genre. The only ones I can't seem to do are comedy and horror. I'm not that big a fan of horror films and I'm too serious to be a comedy writer. :)

Adam J Fernandes

Suzan, the two biggest pieces of advice I can give 'baby' writers are as follows:

What worried me the most about was dialog. Dialog has two jobs. the first is to tell you something about the characters (attitude , morality, feelings, etc.) and the other purpose is to move the story along. What worried me the most about was dialog. I read some advice a long time ago that f you understand the scene, its place in the story, and the characters, the dialog will write itself.

The second is that don't be afraid of the story. Allow it to take you where it needs to go. I understand the whole point of trying to sell yourself (Which is a problem I've always had.), but if this story makes you go in a dark direction and doesn't have a happy ending and it works, that's okay.

Adam J Fernandes I'm blown away by the number of scripts you've written! If you haven't already, check out our screenwriting contests that we run throughout the year: https://www.stage32.com/scriptservices/contests. With 70 scripts, I'm sure you have something that fits many of our contest genres.

"The second is that don't be afraid of the story. Allow it to take you where it needs to go." That's something I've embraced with my more recent scripts, Adam J Fernandes. I outline about 100% of my scripts, but I leave enough room for the story to go where it needs to go. A lot of time, the script ends up better.

I also like to outline different endings and pick the best one.

Mark Garbett

I mean I've written 71 1/2 scripts so.... I win??? ;)

Adam, that's pretty damn impressive, keep up the good work.

Adam J Fernandes

haha... Thanks, Mark! We all win here! :)

Maurice, I've learned the value of outlining over the years. Any kind of pre-writing you can do helps. As far as endings go, I've always thought that the best endings are the ones that feel like the logical conclusion of the stories, and are not forced because 'audiences like happy endings' or whatever.
