Telling Stories with Immersive Cinematography

Recently Apple announced a big push into Immersive product to feed, no doubt, their Apple Vision Pro product line. If I reflect back on innovations in film and filmmaking over the years, this move into Immersive (creating as close to a real experience for the viewer) seems to be on the par with the invention of talkies or perhaps color film. With most other innovations (use stereoscopic, for example) the learning curve was smaller because to use the technology was to simply modify existing approaches to accommodate the new gimmick. Now, with a nodal camera that can see 180 or 360 degrees, how do you tell stories that are effective yet maintain the immersive quality? What are your thoughts on this coming technology and how, as cinematographers, we will sort out the many challenges?

Let's see what they can do with this 180-360 degree technology first and watch it. Then we'll be a better place to decide. I remember when VR-AR was the big push, said it was going to impact movies. The 4D experience has been a part of Universal Studios Tour for a decade or so during the "Shrek" exhibit and Simpsons virtual roller coaster. It's great for a ride, but don't ask me to pay up at the box office.
