The Next Era of On-Screen Musicals

Hi everyone!

One of my current writing obsessions is reimagining what the next era of musicals could look like for TV and film.

What if we told more musical stories over 8 hours instead of just 2 or 3? What if the music wasn’t limited to traditional Broadway styles, but leaned into darker tones and modern genres like EDM, retro synth, or electro-pop?

I’m currently developing a TV show called Stop ZIlla, which aims to do exactly that. It’s a genre-bending musical supernatural mystery thriller, and I’ve just put together a mock trailer to give a taste of the world we’re building.

I’m also developing a pitch through a Stage 32 workshop, so I’d love to connect with others exploring bold storytelling and boundary-pushing musical formats.

I love this idea! Some of the Bollywood movies I've seen do different genres of songs, like "Where's the Party Tonight?" from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has a kind of electro-pop beat which is a nice departure from what I've heard in other movies, and it feels very emotionally packed, too. I love musicals and would 100% watch a longer one if it's a good story with lots of catchy songs regardless of genre :D
