Filmmaking / Directing : Deep In The Heart of Creole Country by Libby Wright

Deep In The Heart of Creole Country

Hello friends. As part of the July Challenge, I'm sharing what it's like to create movies where I live. We're in Creole country here, and the Southern Charm runs deep!

Our town adores film-making, and as the oldest permanent settlement of the Louisiana Purchase (yep we're older than even NOLA) there is so much opportunity to highlight the beauty and history of our culture. Many visitors say it feels like a trip to Europe and a trip back in time all at once. Need French speakers- no problem! Need a location? Just ask! Because we're also neighborly here. And because it's so historic, it looks much the same as when the hit Steel Magnolias was filmed right in my hometown.

We produced our proof of concept film for zero dollars (other than feeding everyone gumbo) and in one day. We let every person in the cast & crew try a role they'd always wanted to do, but had never had the opportunity. And we won awards doing it! Want a sneak peek? Check out our final short proof of concept here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um0EA9dbfwg&t=5s

Now our goal is to make this into a feature film. We're seeking funding, an executive producer, and we're in talks with some great talent and directors to get attached.

The shot at 5:21 looks as though it could be a painting. It is incredibly popping in color, but very atmospheric as well. The camera work and tone of this invokes so many emotions. A wonderful short, I hope you and everyone involved is beyond proud; there's clearly passion and potential.

Congratulations on winning the awards, Libby Wright and everyone who worked on Engaged-Ish! Great proof of concept! Making a proof of concept film for zero dollars in one day is really impressive! Got any more gumbo?

Libby Wright, This is such a fantastic glimpse into the heart and spirit of Creole country. Thank you for sharing it as part of July Filmmakers Club! Your proof of concept is a testament to what’s possible when community, creativity, and culture come together. I love that you empowered your cast and crew to step into dream roles; that kind of collaborative energy shines through on screen!
