Producing : Guidance please. by Kevin Hoyer

Kevin Hoyer

Guidance please.

Hello Stage 32 Community,

I’m not exactly new here, but it feels like it. I joined about 11 years ago and never really utilized Stage 32. However, I’m back and in need of some guidance. I’m reaching out for help finding a producer for my first feature script, A Hell of Heaven, a horror/thriller set in the 1980s that explores psychological paralysis and the traumatic inhibition to survive.

Attached is a deck for the script that offers a clearer understanding of the project, its tone and genre, and the type of producer needed to bring it to life.

I’m an NYU Tisch alumnus (Film & TV program) and had the privilege of studying writing and directing with Adrienne Weiss through a private mentorship. My background includes production coordination work across film, television, commercials, and fashion on projects in New York City and abroad. My work has screened at festivals around the world, and my script has received accolades on the horror festival circuit. I’m currently based just outside Houston, Texas, where I live with my wife and two daughters.

I look forward to reconnecting with this community and truly appreciate any advice or connections you’re able to share.

Thank you very much,

Kevin Hoyer

Hey, Kevin Hoyer. Great to meet you. Stage 32 has a blog that'll help you connect with creatives and industry pros all over the world. Producers, executives, writers, actors, and more. www.stage32.com/blog/the-importance-of-community-and-collaboration-in-th...

And Stage 32’s next Community Open House is happening on October 29th (www.stage32.com/education/products/stage-32-s-october-community-open-hou...). It's free, and it'll help you connect with creatives and industry pros. There's going to be a live Q&A during the Open House.

You could also search for a producer in the Browse Members section (www.stage32.com/people?name=&location=&roles=Producer).

Kevin Hoyer

Thanks Maurice. I will look into the links you have provided.

Is there a way to post PDFs on here?

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Kevin Hoyer. Yeah, you can post a pdf of your script on your profile. Producers search profiles for projects. That and networking are how I sold four short scripts to a producer. Click the gear symbol in the top right-hand corner and select “Edit profile” in the drop-down menu. Scroll down to “Loglines” and click “Add/edit loglines” to the right of “Loglines.” You can also post your script on your profile this way: www.stage32.com/loglines (near the top where it says “Add a Logline”)

You can do the same thing with a pdf of your pitch deck, but you'll have to make a separate page for the deck. Or if you have a link to your deck, you could post it in the synopsis area of your logline page.

Kevin Hoyer

Okay, so while I’m able to post my logline and synopsis, it doesn’t seem possible to post my pitch deck. It’s getting a bit frustrating, to be honest.

Maurice Vaughan

Do you see the "Upload a Screenplay " button, @Kevin?

Kevin Hoyer

Yes, but I want to upload a pitch deck.

Maurice Vaughan

You can use that button to upload a pitch deck, Kevin Hoyer. Just add "Pitch Deck" to the file name so producers know it's a deck.

Kevin Hoyer

First, thank you, Maurice, for all your help. While yes, I can upload my pitch deck in the designated spot for a screenplay, and yes, the file name does contain “pitch deck,” the icon/link that redirects a producer, (anyone) to the file literally says “View Screenplay.” which doesn’t make a lick of bloody sense. I'm sorry but this really irks me.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Kevin Hoyer. It's because Stage 32 mainly encourages members to add screenplays to their profiles. You could put a note in the synopsis area like I do saying the file that's attached is a pitch deck.

Geoffroy Faugerolas

Welcome back, Kevin!

Your project sounds interesting. Great timing too, as period horror has been performing well.

I'd recommend targeting producers who've done 1980s period pieces OR psychological horror in the 5-10M budget range (I'm guessing that's your sweet spot based on the genre/period). You could also submit to screenwriting competitions to connect with producers in the horror genre.

Email me and the team at success@stage32.com and we'll match you with the right execs/producers and share opportunities that would be a good fit for your project.

Kevin Hoyer

Thank you, Geoffroy. I believe I was speaking (emailing) with Pat A(lexander) earlier today. I’ll ask him to forward my information to you. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

And once again, thank you, Maurice, for being patient with me.
