Good Morning my fellow professionals! I want to pick everyone's brain on this. Is there a difference in credibility if you are acting on a traditional set (movie, sitcom, drama, etc.) than a reality show scripted set?
IMO, it is a big difference... Actors who study for years to get cast in meaningful productions should receive much more credit than some Joe Blow off the street, who has never had a day of training in their lives, that is cast in a reality show. It takes no Academy Award acting potential to be cast as a Real Housewife or a Jersey Shorian. Reality tv with no purpose is just a joke.
The only thing I would say to that is there are exceptions that prove every rule. For instance Jamie Chung, who got her start on The Real World I believe, is an up and coming actress who's just been cast as a recurring character in "Once Upon A Time". NeNe Leakes, who's in the Real Housewives of Atlanta has a recurring role on "Glee". Elizabeth Hasselbeck got her start on "Survivor" and now is the conservative voice on "The View". There may be others, but those are the three that come to mind right now. It's probably a route I wouldn't choose to go because I do believe you have to work doubly hard on the credibility factor. But then again, as a working actor when the rent is due and nothing else is coming down the pipeline that's gonna keep a roof over your head, a choice would have to be made. Just sayin'...
I appreciate the feed back on this topic. Sorry it took a while to get back to everyone but i see that what i felt about it seems to be shared by others. I try not to just audition for anything and scripted reality is one of those things. thanks for the feed back! :^)
