Seeking VFX/CGI Professionals for Budget Guidance on an Independent Sci-Fi Short

Hello everyone!

I'm currently producing a short sci-fi proof-of-concept and am researching the potential cost of bringing experienced VFX/CGI talent onto the project.

The visual target is high-end cinematic CG/VFX, with references ranging from Star Wars fan-films such as Vader Episode II or The 212th, to shorts featured in Love, Death, & Robots. Think high-end Unreal Engine-style animation. The project is roughly three minutes, with one primary character model and several others that appear briefly.

At this stage, I'm not necessarily looking to hire. I'm primarily trying to establish a realistic price range and understand what types of VFX professionals or boutique studios would be appropriate for this kind of work. This is mainly for potential investors.

If you've worked in VFX, CGI, animation, virtual production, or VFX producing/supervision, I'd particularly appreciate insight into:

• Typical budget ranges for a small amount of high-quality cinematic VFX/CG

• How pricing is usually determined (per shot, per second, project, etc.)

• What factors tend to drive the cost up or down

• Whether independent productions are better served by individual specialists, small teams, or boutique studios

• Recommendations for artists or companies that might be worth contacting

Even a rough ballpark or a recommendation to someone with relevant experience would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!

David
