Hi, Everyone! I gradated at year ago and struggling to find work. I particularly interested in becoming a Camera Operator. I've applied for a number of jobs and trainee positions but either don't get a reply or told that I don't have enough experience. I cant afford to volunteer for long periods of time. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?

I'm from Canada not the UK so don't know if the following will help. Here, both IATSE (camera union) and the CSC (Canadian Society of Cinematographers) have training programs that will teach you camera but also help you network and make connections for getting paying work. We also have Mandy.com and Craigslist.com that have a lot of low or non paying jobs that will take people with little or no experience.
I actually never thought about joining a union as I thought they can only help established camera operators. I must look and see if we have something similar over here. I'm from Northern Ireland and I know we have Creative Skillset that’s like a careers advice centre for all sorts of media and Northern Ireland Screen from where I heard about all the jobs I’ve applied for but I don’t know of any unions. I will go do some research and see if there are any over here, I’m sure there are. Thanks for the advice greatly appreciated.
