Screenwriting : The Black List by Chris Keaton

The Black List

Anyone try it out? I put my family script, 'Grand Theft UFO' up and it scored an 8. You can check it out here: https://www.blcklst.com/members/script/7157 Not sure the $75 was worth it yet. I've got a couple more days of hosting left, but it appears all my downloads happened when the newsletter went out and nothing since. :/

Kamala Lane

Wow. I didn't know the list was open to writers trying to break in.What does an 8 mean? Are you able to track how much traffic your script is generating?

Chris Keaton

Well, there is a separation from, The Black List that will let us schleps join and the big end of the year one. The end of the year one is based on a survey of industry folks just asking them what the top 10 unproduced screenplays they've read were. They have a 10 point system, an 8 or above will get you on their newsletter that they blast to all their industry contacts. You can see what your views have been and how many downloads and that's the rub. I got practically no views or downloads, except the day it went out on their newsletter and that's it. So I figure continued hosting isn't going to be of much value if all the industry people are doing is looking at the newsletter and not the site.

Kamala Lane

Oh I see. Yeah I just read an old thread about the details on DoneDeal. I'd like to try it for a month or 2. I'll see if I can fit that into my competition/fellowship budget this year.

Thank you, Chris.

My relationship with 'The Black List' is officially over and here's my take.... Only submit your top script. This isn't a place to get reviews, this is a place to sell your script. And besides it's a waste of money to post a 'not yet ready' script....here's why... You need to spend $75. This buys you 30 days of hosting (people get to see you have a script) and 1 rating/review. This is really just a rating. They may point out a good tid-bit or two, but it's not a review. If you score an '8' or above you get on their Newsletter for that week and it gets blasted to all their industry contacts (who want to be blasted). There are so many scripts now on the site that these industry people are only looking at those scripts in the newsletter. Luckily, they tell you how many times your logline has been seen 'impressions' and how many times it's been downloaded. 90% of my impressions and 99% of my downloads came when the newsletter was released and that was it. Because of that I stopped my hosting, because if no one is looking what's the point in paying $25 a month? Oh, and these industry people can rate your script. On my last day I got a rating of a 4 which took my average to a 6 out of 10. Not that anyone would notice though. :) Out of all of this I did get one honest inquiry that upon hearing I didn't live in LA... well turned me down. I may get other contacts, if I do I'll say so here.

Kamala Lane

Good to know. Thanks again.

Chris Keaton

I got another contact. Will be having a meeting in the near future.

Kamala Lane

That's so cool. I hope it goes very well.
