It was a TED talk that made me accept the invitation to join Stage 32, when my normal impulse would be to decline. But I have joined and I am participating despite my feeling that there is a tendency to always want to be searching and developing networks globally, and to overlook the logistically accessible networks within our own local communities. Very aware of this living in New Zealand. In my own experience, it's the face to face contact that ultimately creates genuinely productive connections for both producing (raising finance), distribution, getting crew and cast. My concern is that in the face of the enormous expectations that social media networking promises, so much precious time can disappear to no particular end except for superficial, random and opportunistic connections, and we end up not making films at all. I have added the link to the terrific Amanda Palmer TED talk. Also a link to my website so other Stage 32ers can get a sense of where my own film making preoccupations lie. www.torchlightfilms.co.nz http://video.ted.com/talk/podcast/2013/None/AmandaPalmer_2013-light.mp4
