Screenwriting : Joining WGA by Michael Fodera

Joining WGA

Hi all, a producer friend of mine strongly urges that anybody writing today should join WGA to protect their work. I'm on their site right now looking at all of the perks but I'd really like to hear the pros and cons from people who are currently part of the Guild. Any info would be helpful, please don't reply unless you're in the WGA. Thanks.

Michael Fodera

Hi D Marcus, are you part of WGA?

Michael Fodera

Thanks for answering the question Laura

As Laura says - your friend most probably meant: Copyright your work before sending it out.

Personally, I prefer the Library of Congress. Cheaper - has an additional benefit - and lasts many more years [forever?]

WGA is a few hundred dollars and will not protect anything if you haven't sold anything, One joins AFTER being offered a contract - now you can get contract advice and protection. But you still need to copyright - at a discount, of course.

yes by all means register completed screenplay with WGA essential you can do it again if there are any changes later well worth while i was frustrated by the incomplete information they provide about agents and managers' expected some kind of code to guide writers through the maze. Anyone find the key? thanks

being a part of the WGA is a win, win! You can't go wrong there. If you can afford the cost, it is the best way to go to protect your works, but before that I would seek out an Intellectual Properties Attorney, join the the Lawyer Arts orgs in your area. Here in Calif, it is the CLFA Calif Lawyers For the Arts.
