Acting : Are you selling out? by JD Cannon

Are you selling out?

With sites that pay 10-30 bucks for your voice, are you hurting the industry? I think so. When you devalue yourself, others will do so willingly as well. Some one-line project don't command the high rates that others do but $5 gigs hurt everyone. My question is "what i your bottom line"? I read a comment this am that the employer stated that he only uses a certain (low paying) site to hire. I'm sure he finds all the talent he needs but is it really "talent"? Freedom to free lance is great, it's a teaching and learning tool. Once you obtain the talent to get on exclusive sites you may find your voice recorded on projects that you wish you never accepted. We all have to cut our teeth, so to speak but realise that your voice or lack of voice talent will be memorialised on someones project forever. This could possibly hurt your business later. I listened to a few of my "starter pieces" and instantly knew why they didn't make the cut. I digress.. Cheap rates hurt everyone... Even the person who scrapes up the low budget job... In the long run. When you obtain the talent to get paid your worth, some other Rookie, will infringe on your pocket. Even non-union actors need to set a minimum. That way, we all retain our value and keep a even, well paying field. A little integrity goes a long way... to the bank.
