Acting : Stage fright/ awkwardness by Nathaniel Velez

Stage fright/ awkwardness

I have never experienced this before, as a matter of fact i enjoy performing in front of an audience but recently we had to do this exercise in class that you should take 2-3 minutes of your life in privacy and perform it. I thought it would be very easy but when i was doing it in front of people i was very aware and it made feel awkward and i panicked. It resulted to an awful performance. Any advice on what can i do? Thank You

Sounds to me like you weren't grounded and in your own personal bubble doing what you would do if you were alone. You were aware of your surroundings and of being watched and focused on it. Generally this is one of the first things they teach you about in acting class; perhaps talk to your acting coach about what exercises he or she may recommend to help you get grounded. There are different techniques and different exercises work for different people. You could try a breathing technique, where you focus on your breathing; deep breaths, relaxing your body and letting your mind go. Self talk that you are alone + breathing prior to the start of your scene. Hard to explain via a message. Lol

Or you picked something that should stay private... Not many are honest, nor can they really handle the truth, hence 'sugar coated'.

Nathaniel, I'm familiar with that exercise as I just recently went through it in class. I agree with the comments above about how important it is for you to get and remain grounded. This exercise is a bit different than performing because it requires you to be even more vulnerable. I've incorporated a process of speaking to myself before doing my work to get myself into the right state of mind and state of body, so to speak. The conversation reminds me that, I'm already enough, to let go of any need to 'be good' and I reconnect with my breath and my body. You can dig in and look at the root of your nervousness. Was it a desire to be good? If so, you can focus your efforts on letting that go. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be great, I think you run into troubles when you try to be great though. Hope that makes sense!
