Hey guys. So I have an upcoming audition for a small film and they want me to have 1-2 monologues prepared. I've never learned a monologue before and am not really sure on how to approach it. I've been told that I shouldn't do anything too well known, as I will just be compared to the original. Does anyone know a good source for finding monologues? I'd greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks so much.

Some tips for monologues are definately not to pick a really well known one. In fact there are a lot of great monologues from old movies. another tip. Dont rehearse it too much. I know that sounds weird because you want to be prepared but you also dont want it to sound like a speech. Memorize it really good so you know the words really well but dont say it with real emotion for a while. Once you have it memorized perfectly try saying it with a lot of different emotions. Sad, Angry, Scared, Romantic, Funny, Intense. everything you can think of even if it sounds silly. Do it fast, slow etc. and record yourself doing all of this. watch the recording and take notes maybe you liked how a particular line came out sad, even though its a funny piece. etc. then write down the emotion you feel in the scene, the objective, the obstacle, how you will get the objective and do some back story on your character. What kind of person is he? what is his relationship to the charactars he's talking to etc. Making the character real brings life to the piece. Then what you need to do is substitute what he's dealing with to what you are dealing with. substitute who is talking to with someone similar in your own life. After you have done all of that work record it and ask a few friends for their input and then use their advice. there is your free acting lesson. Good luck on your audition.
