Some Days You Can't Get Arrested

And other days, every sister and brother on the planet want a piece of you. This has been one of those wonderful weeks when you feel reborn as a writer. I don't take the trust and confidence that my friends and colleagues place in me lightly---I hustle and network and work my ass off. I have a trusted circle of writer pals, they have my back and I have theirs. This didn't happen overnight. There is no shortcut. Be fearless. Be bold. Go for broke. So what if you stub your toe or embarrass yourself. No one will remember about it tomorrow. Cast a wide net, you never know what the Universe will throw your way.

Richard "RB" Botto

I love hearing this, Pj. And, man, do I agree. You have to handle the ebbs and flows if you want to be a creative, but you DO have the power to create more flow than ebb. Casting a wide net, smart networking, being open minded and always striving for improvement will always help you win more days than not. As always, wishing you the best riding these fast moving clouds...

The day you stop trying, you might as well start dying.

Writing is like life, some days are good, some days are horrible. Everyone has their low points. It's what you do at the low points that define you as a person and as a writer. RB knows what I'm talking about. He had an idea, pursued it, and now look at him. It's never too late. Dream big. Have lofty ambitions. Yeah, I'm probably never going to get a meeting with the Weinsteins, but I won't stop trying.

Richard "RB" Botto

I'm willing to be you will get that meeting with the Weinsteins (or the equivalent), PJ. You have too much talent and too much drive. And by the way..."It's what you do at the low points that define you as a person and as a writer." Simply perfect.

At one low point in my life I came to a conclusion: life beats you up enough, don't help it out. As a history buff I remembered a saying about Nazi Germany: they ruled as far as their bullets would travel, and not once inch more. In this context, it translates as "give problems their due and fix them if possible, and not one inch more, and then put them in the rear view mirror." Once I embraced that attitude I stopped thinking about problems and mistakes all the time, which allowed more space in my mind for positive thoughts. With the tsunami of rejection that any artist faces, we need all the positive vibrations we can get. If the mind is basically clear of negative thoughts - the kind that make you turn up the stereo in the car to drive them out of your head - then the mind is free, lubricated, ready to turn your dreams into a plan (by creating a realistic schedule) and then acting on that plan. "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." - United Negro College Fund It is up to us to spend it on our stories.

Never loose your passion, enjoy the process as if you are writing for a Spierberg or Weinstein. The hard part how does one reach such people????

Pj McIlvaine

RB, from your lips. You can't let every rejection get you down. If you did, you'd be paralyzed with fear and worry. Sometimes you just have to let the Universe carry the load.

Great spirit, PJ! :)

People don't know how to take this but that is the feeling I get when my pen named person takes all the responsibility for what he wrote. He can take rejection and heavy criticism because he is a bastard anyway.

Sylvia Marie Llewellyn

What a great thread. Thanks Pj.
