I make 3D Character Animation Tools for Everyone

Hello Everyone, My name is Blake Senftner. I am founder, CEO and "Mad Computer Scientist" at the 3D Avatar Store. We have created an instant 3D Avatar creation platform with quite rich capabilities. Given one head shot style photo, neural nets locate the various facial features, and generate a 3D geometry looking very much like the person in the photo. https://3d-avatar-store.com/3D-Avatar-Creation-walkthru Given the typical quality of a high resolution head shot, the produced face and head geometry is remarkably good. It's not "digital double" quality as would be used in VFX for film, but if that is your goal our 3D Avatars provide a head start on such realistic modeling, saving 1-2 days off a digital artist's work. Our avatars have full facial animation controls right in your web browser, and can be exported with a Maya performance animation rig. Our avatar capabilities are wide and diverse, with a consumer targeted web site that also offers professional quality exports as well as a WebAPI for 3rd parties to license and embed custom 3D character creation in their games, apps, and films. We are currently working on a consumer targeted lip syncing 3D Avatar animation editor. Our professional offerings are largely completed, and we are creating an animation platform aimed at kids, teens, and families to collaborate in the creation of shorts, games, simulated personalities, and more.

It may not be clear, but what we are doing is positioning media and animation creation as a form of entertainment in itself.

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

This is really, really cool Blake. What's your background? I saw that you were with Rhythm & Hues - what did you do before then? What do you think about Oculus Rift and how it's going to affect the industry?

Blake Senftner

Thanks, Julie. I'm currently working on a Kickstarter, and my (full) profile over there details my background as it relates to my company pretty well: https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/bsenftner . I've got a wait and see attitude about the Oculus Rift. Palmer Luckey is a pretty dedicated guy, so it will be interesting to see what happens with their billion dollar wallet. Having spent decades in the games industry, my perspective is probably a bit more pessimistic than would be expected. I, personally, have high hopes for serious games, education, and virtual personalities - which do not necessarily require VR. It may be a few beats before the Rift has non-classically warfare based gaming applications. Once the community gets past that obvious application, things get interesting from an animation and purpose-beyond-violence perspective.
