Yes this does interest me. However I was told that a demo reel is something that I've played in a movie. i can't just write something and act it out. It must be part of a production. Is that true?

Honestly, there are no rules. Lots of actors have demo reels comprised of footage from short films or indie features that no one's heard of anyway. I came about doing these workshops after listening to many actors complain that they're not getting any roles because they don't have a demo reel, or that they've volunteered in a bunch of local indie stuff and were promised footage for their reel that they never received. The workshop will be comprised of two days of shooting. On one day we will focus on some dramatic scenes that will make a short film. I'll write the scenes specifically for the people that are in attendance and each actor will have a decent sized role where they will be able to shine. I'll post the short online for everyone to have access to and you'll get imdb credit. On the second day we will shoot one or two commercials for local businesses and a bunch of small scenes to show each actors range of emotions and ability. When a director or casting agent looks at your demo reel they'll hopefully be concerned with your acting in the scenes and not that some of the scenes may have been staged for the reel, but for the most part the majority of your reel will be legitimate footage from the short film and the commercials. When I do casting I usually don't even bother reading anyone's resume. I'm an indie filmmaker and at my budget any local actor I'm going to audition probably hasn't been in anything I've seen unless I know the people that made the movie or it was a really tiny/extra role. I usually look at the demo reel to see how the person looks on camera and to see if they have any ability, not to see what they were in. If they're good I invite them to audition. I hate doing open auditions because 90% of the people that show up aren't right for any of the parts or don't have the ability. If you're looking for roles in indie movies, I can almost guarantee that most directors feel like I do. I will make you a demo reel that will get the audition. The rest is up to you :)

I love the idea. But the price is out of range for me right now. My budget is stretched too thin anyways to make it fit. Maybe next time?

I just finished typing this huge thing out, so please forgive me, but I'm going to copy and paste my facebook message to save time and then you can hit me up with questions :) ATTN: Actors in need of demo reel: I am a local filmmaker from Ferndale and I would like to offer a new service to aspiring actors. Next week Monday, September 23rd we will be having an actors workshop where we will shoot a short scenes specifically designed to give actors demo reel footage. I will be writing a unique script for the event and custom tailoring it to suit the actors in the workshop. We will be filming in the Ferndale/Royal Oak area. I have room for a few more actors of any ethnicity and age. Any actors under 18 will need a parent or guardian to be with them for the entire shoot. I've heard many complaints that actors are typically offered footage when they work on local indie films and more often than not that footage never gets to their hands. I guarantee you'll receive your demo reel within two weeks and if you have preexisting footage I'll edit your new footage into it for you. I've set the scenes up to be in the form of a short film so that everyone can get IMDB credit for the shoot as well. If you don't have an IMDB page yet, I'll set one up for you. Some other benefits that you'll gain from this experience are that you'll meet other actors in your area. Connections and networking in this business is crucial. Also, I am an active Director/Cinematographer and a real guy. I'm not some corporation that will lose you in a sea of clients. I've got my ear to the ground and have lots of connections in the Michigan film scene and will keep you posted on any projects I hear about. I also do many film contests and commercials and am regularly looking for actors and will always give talent that I've worked with priority. I've consulted with many actors in the area on what to charge for this. In New York and LA companies will charge over $1000 for this type of service. I understand we're not in NY or LA, so as an introductory offer, we will be holding our first workshop for $300 AND if you know any other actors that may be interested, I'll give you a $50 discount for any paying referrals! If you think you don't need a demo reel, you're sorely mistaken. As a director I've held many auditions and I can attest that sometimes a demo reel can make or break a decision. Often, if there are multiple decent actors for a single role we'll look to their demo reel to see what their range and experience is. Having a resume and IMDB is great, but there's nothing comparable to actually seeing an actor in action. If this service interests you please contact me!
