Did you succeed in any screenplay competition?

Yeah, I know, there must be a million other threads on here somewhere re this subject, well I didn't see it/them - I just read the one with the Nicholls competition, there are numerous other competitions that I presume will make announcements soon - I'm waiting for Scriptapalooza to unveil their res...

Steve, I completely agree "just reaching some level of recognition is a worthwhile win" - but we seem to have quite a few of those, which is excellent, it would also be interesting to have someone act...

I agree too. One of the reasons I entered The Page contest, is that if you make it to the semi-finals, there is a good chance of being read by producers and managers. So for me that was the only win I was looking for. But I will keep you posted after the 15th.

Congratulations Randy ;) R.

Are " personal attacks" normal? How can you cope with them?

I am currently writing a (non-screenplay) story on a forum. Some replies weren't focused on the work itself, but on me, as a writer. Some said " Quit writing! Plow the field instead!", others said: " I hope you have a serious job!". Another one said: " You have absolutely no clue on this subject!"....

Danny Manus

You want personal attacks? Try twitter. God the people on there are so vicious and they don't even know you!

Andrea E. Windsor

Cyber Bullies, Danny. They're actually cowards behind a screen. Nothing but wimps in real life. Just hit the delete button as soon as the conversation gets ugly.

I Want Out

small minds will attack, Better minds will give constructive comments. Sometimes the latter can sting because with the arts reality can suck. I think the thing to remember is do it for yourself. That...

Writing in different genres

Do you think that a writer can successfully write in different genres?

David E. Gates

I was comfy in all three of my boxes. Each serve their purpose. We are adaptable.

Stevan Šerban

Great but some genre certainly prefer or feel better when you're writing a comedy, but when you write horror?

David E. Gates

Depends... I got a lot of enjoyment out of writing the horror as it took me to places I can never go in real life... well, not legally anyway. The comedy aspects of my writing in my most recent book o...

My primary goals for 2015: 1. Promote existing, commercially viable screenplays via contests and Happy Writers ("Truckin' with Smilin' Jack", "Home Brew", "Amoe", "Dusty Works"). 2. Develop the current major, new screenplay ("Set Fire") and prep for promotion. 3. Produce the current animation short...

To Write or...

Writing is like running. It only feels good when you stop. We all like having written. It is the process that is like nails in the forehead. My freshmen students tell me writing is easy -- they have no crap detector, no inner editor, no critic, no quality control. They just vomit forth a draft and call it complete. Rewriting? Bah. What say?

Steve Sherman

... or pizza. Even when it's bad, it's still good.

I think it makes sense that writers approach writing differently. I know for me sometimes I love it and sometimes it's awful. Did you ever see that meme that went around that described the creative pr...

Reverb/Convolution On A Budget

Samuel Estes has posted here a great opportunity for those who have some money to buy some high quality reverb products. But what do those of us who are on a budget do if we don't want to spend money on reverb/convolution. In my case, I am trying to direct my music budget towards finally moving towa...

I believe that when I was still doing 32-bit, I 'borrowed', the VST "Perfect Space" to do my reverb/convolution from Sonar to use with Sibelius 6 (before I upgraded to 7).

FWIW, I'm a big fan of BREVERB2 by Overloud (on Sonar Producer) which is not too expensive, IMO: http://www.overloud.com/products/breverb2.php It has become my "go to" reverb. Besides very good qualit...

Ditto on the concept of saving and sharing ideas and to keep those ideas coming. Most are terrible, but they can lead to good things. I use ideas folders on my laptop. Logline Examples from the Academy's 2013 Nicholl Fellowship Finalists

The following examples of loglines might be of interest given the many posts asking for assistance with these things that seem to bedevil many screenwriters. These five scripts were selected by the Academy's judges from about 7,000 entries. Perhaps what's most important about these loglines is that...

It seems to me that loglines are a sales tool. Most of these loglines wouldn't make it past the censors on this blog! :)

A good logline will embody the following: Who is the main character? What is he or she trying to accomplish? Who is trying to stop him/her? What are the consequences of failure. If there is no struggl...

Would you watch this movie?

When a large eccentric family buys a defunct church property to live in, the townspeople mistake the surly grandfather for a minister and start showing up for church on Sundays. (Kind of like Modern Family meets We Bought a Zoo.)

Rick Meyer

As much as I lean toward proper grammar, English is constantly morphing, so if it makes sense to the reader, it probably works. There is no place for ad hominem attacks unless we want an unappealing forum here.

Wendy Nichols

Hi David and everyone. I've really appreciated the comments and feedback, and imagine many others have too. Thanks for the insights.

I like the use of ad hominem, Rick, prefer the full argumentum ad hominem, though - I agree re the personal attacks, but too many here cannot discern the difference between a mild dig towards someone...

What is the impact on our community?

The movie, television and music industries have been in the news of late. Most recently, Variety announced a 19% employment drop over the past two years and that Warner Brothers will have layoffs. This means dumping more talented people into a field that some say is so crowded that someone needs to...
