I say go for it, as long as it's tasteful, we creative types would certainly appreciate it. There are child serial killers, and you can even reference one. Much success.
As a parent I'd argue this one way, and as a filmmaker I'd argue it another. It would certainly make for a terrifying movie. The question is how "truthful" are you being? Are you making people afraid...

Are you making people afraid for just the thrill, or are you really exploring the murderer's personality so that the audience believes that they could avoid such a person in the future? My one piece of advice is to have someone kill the murderer at the end. No "bringing to justice" will ever be satisfying.
Hollywood made children of the corn in 1984 and people did receive it. So I guess it's about how the plot is set up
