Smokey, 14, after his father's devastating encounter with a snake, is chosen to embark on the Long Paddock. This is the last effort to save their remaining cattle and the family farm. On the road, traveling alone with his cattle and three dogs for company, Smokey encounters many characters. Some are friendlier than others. Experiencing losses along the way Smokey forges strong friendships, becomes involved in a murder-mystery that haunts a small town, and transitions out of childhood. Gunnie, 14, the great-great-grandson of Smokey, is gifted Smokey's journal by his grandfather along with a mysterious envelope that he must not open until after he has read the journal. Curious Gunnie goes with his father to spend the weekend at Wiralee. As he reads through Smokey's journal that documents the adventures of the Long Paddock, Gunnie learns more about himself and his family.
