While homelessness has risen across Canada in recent decades, research indicates that Aboriginals are greatly over-represented in the community: According to the city of Toronto, Aboriginals represent less than three percent of the city's urban population but over 25% of its homeless. What accounts for this large discrepancy? A study requested by Anishnawbe Health Toronto, NA-ME-RES and Native Child and Family Services Toronto in 2008 cites discrimination as one of the largest contributing factors to homelessness. Homeless in the Homeland is a 30-minute video project I completed for my master's thesis in documentary journalism. The documentary explores how a history of systematic racism and ongoing prejudice affects the community through the experiences of a young man who fights daily to survive. Written by Anonymous
