About Tim

Tim Beck is a composer based in Los Angeles, California. A native of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Tim graduated from Duquesne University in 2012, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Composition from the Mary Pappert School of Music. While attending there, Tim studied with the likes of David Stock (founder of the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble), Mike Tomaro, David Cutler, Mark Koch, Benjamin Binder, and Eliyahu Tamar.

As a composer, Tim has written several styles of music, including chamber music, jazz, orchestral, electronic, pop/rock, and film scores. He has scored for several works including short films, commercials, documentaries, and 4 feature films. In 2012, Tim was selected as a winner for the Pittsburgh Festival Orchestra Collegiate Composers Scholarship for his piece, "Sustantivo," duet for piano and oboe. In 2013, Tim was selected as one of nine emerging film composers to attend the "Composing for the Screen" workshop in New York City, hosted by BMI and run by composer Rick Baitz.  In 2014, Tim served as a studio Assistant to Henry Jackman and Sacred Tiger Music in Santa Monica, CA. In 2015, Tim assisted with tech work and played guitar for the score of the major motion picture "Jem and the Holograms", presented by Universal Pictures. In 2016, Tim's original film score to the feature film "On The Brain" was nominated for Best Musical Score for a Feature Film at the Idyllwild International Festival for Cinema.

As an arranger, Tim has focused more on rock/pop and jazz. The Duquesne University Jazz Ensemble premiered his arrangement of the Cedar Walton tune “Bolivia” in 2011. He will also be working on arrangements of his own jazz repertoire for big band.

As a performer, Tim has been a part of several ensembles. As a member of the Pappert Men’s Chorale for 2 years, Tim sang both Tenor I and II. Tim performed in the Duquesne University Electronic Ensemble, in which he played guitar, guitar synthesizer, keyboard, various synthesizers, and electronic percussion. He has also played guitar for the Duquesne University Jazz Guitar Ensemble, which is headed by Mark Koch. Additionally, Tim performed in his own hard rock band, The Marauders, in which he played lead guitar and sang. Tim was a head-songwriter for the band for several years.
