Composing : Contests for Composers? by Eric Richards

Contests for Composers?

Does anyone know of any contents for composers--either for film scoring or music composition? There are many for filmmakers but I was wondering if there are any special places for composers that Google wouldn't necessarily reveal.

Hello Eric. You may find some contests or festivals here: http://www.composerssite.com/

Many of the competitions have include awards for scoring. Some of them I may question the criteria but an award is an award. The most popular competition in these parts is the "48 Hour Film Project". The one that I score films for that seems a lot more meaningful is the 168 film competition in LA around labor day. The films come from all around the world and there is a nomination process much like the Oscars. Usually 5 or 6 people get nominated for best score. The 168 festival/competition is a Christian-based festival and films are created based on lines from scripture.

There are many more examples. These are but two of the ones I score films for.

Then there are the competitive workshops. ASCAP has a scoring workshop each summer in LA and it is competitive to get chosen. I haven't applied for many years now but last time I tried there were 12 spots - 6 for US and 6 for non-US. There were something like 200 or 250 applications. Most if not all of the US chosen participants that year either had a degree in Music or were in a conservatory. That is not a requirement but those are the 'type' of competitors you would be up against.
