Do you agree with this statement? It's politics and compromises more valued than talent in cinema nowadays? Is it the rule or the exception? What can a filmmaker that isn't to keen on socials and networking and diplomacy do to solve this riddle? Change your persona? Your job? Your core? Attitude? Behaviour? Your inner...self? And here I thought than being yourself and knowing how to make good films were going to be your best assets in the biz.
Anyway, anyone has any thoughts on this? Thank you.
Dunno. Never directed a studio movie.
Let us know how it feels to be a panel guest at Cannes, Sundance or Comic Con events where reporters and film nerds feed off Bs
I don't know about that; I'm not completely sure either. But I know that many a time while shooting a short I had to use diplomacy to diffuse many situations, appease many consciences, and ultimately save the day; and most important the film, which is the very thing you will be judged for in the end. So I guess, to throw in a little politics and disguise, along with your talents of course, it couldn't hurt.
Daniel Latteo you're shooting shorts. Scott is shooting feature movies for profit. I am not sure what Scott means by "political" or in what context. Is he talking about making a movie and working with studios Bosses and Actors? If I remember correctly (Black Rain is one of my fav cop movies), Michael Douglass was a superstar during the 1980s. I think he could hire and fire Scott off Black Rain.
Your job as the Director includes many things - making the actors look good is right up there. When the actors look good, your movie 'll look good - and that'll make you look good. How you go about that is up to you but just by being a normal sociable critter helps a lot - if you treat folks well, they will respect you and become eager to give their best. There are always a few jerks - I try to cut 'em out right up front.
Dan - I've never been a panelist at any big-time festival but I have at a few regional festivals and some colleges. My personal feeling is that regurgitating nerd nutrition is a total waste of time.
-Doug Nelson- Thank you for your comment Doug. I appreciate it.
