Filmmaking / Directing : Why choose ? Let's explore. by Elias Djemil

Why choose ? Let's explore.

There is something about the Cinema. There is all kind of genres, all kind of styles, all kind of approaches. I am wondering sometimes why does the industry, all around the world, makes us choose ? I mean, personnaly as a filmmaker, I don’t want to do just dramas or just action movies. I’m a beginner (6 years alrady though) but I’ve already done an animation film, I’ve done action films, I’ve done some dramas, music videos, corporate…All kind of different styles and genres. What I love the most in this work is the ability to explore it. Why the industry looks at people like me, filmexplorers as like people who can’t succeed ? Why do we have to choose ?

D Marcus

I don't understand. Who in the industry is making you choose? You in the industry is looking at you as someone who can't succeed? You don't have to choose one genre. You can make any movie you feel passionate about. I seems that in sic years you have huge body of diverse work. You should be proud. Imagine what the next six years will be like. You can do anything you want. The only thing we have to choose is what do do next.

Elias Djemil

Thanks for the answer. I am proud of my work and I'm looking in the future with a lot of expectations ! It is just a beginning for me I'd like to think :) What I was talking about is that a couple of times when I talked to some producers for projects they told me "You're doing a lot of different things, so it makes you someone who cannot concentrate and work hard on ONE project" Which I think is false, the fact that I can work on several different projects at the same time is a positif point :) But producers sometimes have a different point of view...

D Marcus

Context is important. I'm a producer; I meet people who have many "irons in the fire" and very little finished. Those are people I feel are ones that cannot concentrate and work hard on ONE project. It does look bad to have a lot of incomplete projects when talking to a producer about their project. If you have completed an animated film, some action films, some dramas , music videos and corporate projects then the producers you have talked to about projects are fools. Even one finished project is more impressive than a dozen incomplete ones.

Elias Djemil

Thats' encouraging. And I think it is true also. Like everyone in the industry I have those 1-2 unfinished projects (Stayed at the development stage because of lack of financing) that's normal I think :) But mostly I always finish my films.

D Marcus

In that case I think that you are overreacting. You have talked to some producers who felt that you couldn't concentrate and work hard on ONE project. That doesn't mean the industry, all around the world, makes us choose only one genre. That mean those producers have an opinion. Those projects you have that didn't get made because of financing are not incomplete projects. You have the finished scripts, right? And you do have finished films, right? And they are in different genres, right? So the industry is not making you choose.

Elias Djemil

You're right Marcus, thanks for the tips. It's refreshing to speak to somebody out of the country I live :)

Ricardo Javier Campoli

It's really good and exciting read these reviews, especially for someone like me because I am just studying in college, audiovisual production (despite my 44 years;)). I think in my country, Argentina, some things in the film are "targeted" by the ideology of the day. Our institution to finance projects to private producers or production companies (INCAA: National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts) has a total dependence on the national government. In recent years, the particularity of the Kirchner government has been misleading the people with disfrasadas statistics. The numbers never matched by reality. Therefore, some of the film and television productions, were concretized with similar characteristics: They had to distract, confuse, never questioning a deep subject us to reality. Of course it's out of this very personal reflection productions Juan José Campanella, for example, is not only famous for winning an Oscar ("The Secret in Their Eyes" 2009), but also as a man of integrity, of good ideas and a true filmmaker, independent of the government to govern. I think that while the industry does not force us to choose, here we condition only approve projects that benefit their view of reality.

Thanks for the encouraging comments !

You don't have to choose, but if you are of the kind of person who is good / great at many things- you do have to simplify your "presentation" for those who can't comprehend people who are good /great at many things. I find that people who are much younger than me underestimate my abilities. With age comes experience and if you are an "over achiever" that brings along many skills. The greatest tragedy that can occur is underestimating yourself because others forced you / you allowed yourself to feel that way. Go where God leads you, not man - but have a simple explanation of three things for when people ask what you do since that is all most people comprehend because of their own limitations. Do not allow other people's jealousy to limit who you can become. Doing excellent work is truly about love, not competition.

Elias Djemil

Thanks Wenda, and don't worry, I know that I can achieve great things, the best is to come. Without being pretentious, I think that I still have a lot of abilities to develop and others to improve, my limits are far, hoping that it will take me a lifetime to reach those limits !
