Hello everyone. I see everyone is doing something great here at stage 32. I learned about this community at the Austin Film Festival a year and a half back. I was intimidated at first with all the information, education and faces. But Ashley gave a webinar that made it easy for me and here I am.
I'm a screen writer from Washington DC and moved to Texas after retiring from the US Army. It wasn't until 3 years ago that I decided to transition from writing books to screen writing. I've taken classes and joined networking groups to help with my journey and I must have done something right, because my screen play "TRANS" made it to the semifinals. I think it's still sinking in, but big shout out to the Stage 32 educators and community. I love movies because it's like the illustration to a collection of good music - which I like both. They can make you laugh, cry, reminisce and empower. I write Drama primarily though my selected script is a dramatic comedy. I love good conversation and learning people's back story. To me everything is writing.

Hey Devon, great to hear from you! Everything IS writing. A long time ago i tried to write a book and thankfully a friend who read it was like i don't think this is a book, this feels too visual, much more like a screenplay... and that set me off on the path of screenwriting. What led to your transition from books to screenwriting?

Hey Pat. Honestly, I wrote books for years. What set me on the path is wanting a life that was different from my own, and writing took me on that fantasy. I could create any life, any location. What started me on path of film writing was similar to yours. I wrote a book and a friend told me, "I can see the movie. " Truth is, I was trapped in a thinking bubble, believing that all good movies started from books and the only way to have a movie is for someone to adapt my books to screen plays. Since, I've been on the path. I see that more opportunities exist than book writing. It's inspiring and motivational.
