On Writing : Hey! It's Me! It's Lilly Everlea. by AK Cooper-Elliot

Hey! It's Me! It's Lilly Everlea.

My editor asked me what is an out meeting?

I replied it is a meeting of people segregated into small groups or a one to one meeting held outside.

“Let’s have out meeting and dry off.” Terrance said.

I so loved using this in Lilly and The Ruby Ring.

Lilly looked inside and saw a dark window. Peering closer Lilly could see a blanket. “What is the that?” she pointed.

This is a great childlike question from Lilly which makes it quite funny so this was defiantly added into the book.

“But Ems, we have a sweetshop and ice-cream parlour all in one and it is aways full of customers.”

Using always became apparent until I read it quickly. Lilly speaking excitingly drops the 'L' and makes the word aways.

My editor wasn't sure about using it, but I liked it and deliberately left it in.

Being Yorkshire can create a language barrier, we tend to miss words. Understanding the same word in a different perspective can be quite difficult for anyone, but eventually everything is agreed. I am using these terms again in my Lilly book two. Exciting times.

I actually had a similar thought as D.E. White did. At first, I thought it was a typo and I had to go back and re-read the post. I admit that I'm not as familiar with regionally specific UK dialects. Within the story, is it clear that Lilly often drops her 'L's when speaking and that her family and others around her do as well? As long as it's layered into the world, I think the reader will adjust and understand. If it only happens once or twice, I could see it becoming confusing.

Hi, yes I understand. I think you are correct. A reader will probably look at it confusingly and think of a typo error. Further down the line all my Lilly books will include Out Meeting and Lilly dropping the 'L' and it will become apparent to the reader. My next Lilly book - Lilly and The Haunted Rectory. Terrance moans at Lilly for dropping the 'L'. Whilst Emily Knott is confused with Terrance's Out Meetings. Your views are much appreciated.
