Taylor Jenkins Reid's First Adaptation "Daisy Jones & The Six" Is Teaching Her How To Share Her Characters

One of my all-time favorite books, Daisy Jones & The Six, is being adapted as a limited series currently airing on Amazon Prime. As of now, only 6 of the 10 episodes have been released, but it's been amazing to see this world come to life. I had a lot of nervousness and apprehension when the adaptation was announced because the book is very unique both in how it's written, and the world that it creates. The author, Taylor Jenkins Reid manages to create a fictional 70s rock band that is so believable and larger than life, that you can practically hear the hit songs that they're described as singing, flowing off the page. When a book pulls something like that off so well, it's even harder for an adaptation to live up to. Incredibly, I think the show is doing a fantastic job! I can't stop listening to the soundtrack on repeat and I'm excited to see the new episodes when they release later this week. I highly recommend both the book and the show!

At SXSW the other day, Taylor Jenkins Reid was interviewed with the cast and talked about how special it's been to replace the characters in her mind with real people that now embody those characters for her. She talks about how new it is for her as an author to share her characters with other people. It's a great interview! I've included the link below.

GiGi Raines

Hi Ashley! Thank you for posting this article. A great read! I keep seeing the show advertised, and I’m definitely going to give it a watch now.

You definitely should, GiGi! They also released the album that the band is creating throughout the season, on Spotify. It's called Aurora and it's a jam.

I've heard really good things about Malibu Rising! I definitely need to give it a read.

May I ask what isn't quite working for you in the adaptation? I'd love to know what your thoughts are.

I completely understand that, D.E. White. I've had trouble getting hooked by adaptations in the past if the cast feels too different from how I imagined the characters to be. It's almost too difficult of mental gymnastics for your brain while you're trying to get lost in a story. For me, I've been really impressed by how similar Riley actually is to how I pictured Daisy, but Sam is quite different from the Billy that I had in my head.
