My daughter wants to start taking classes for video editing, hoping one day to edit for shorts, features, music. What type of computer system and graphic card could you recommend for a beginner, of course within reason of price for a college student? Any and all suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

$300 for a solid video editing program. You don't need a high end Mac to run it, unless you're going 4k. I suggest buying a separate hard drive to store video on 2TB or more. And Apple usually has student discounts and specials. http://www.apple.com/us-hed/shop I personally preferred working in Adobe Premiere, but they went to a monthly lease with Creative Cloud at $49 a month. For six months of renting Premiere, you can own FCP forever. My daughter is 13 and uses FCP for all her videos (and she uses a lot of Green Screen and VFX).

Im a Mac guy and iMovie software is free , good enough for simple projects to start.
Desktop Mac system hardware is gonna cost about $3K. It is the software apps that eats up $$$$.
Final cut pro HD seems to be the number 1 home/pro consumer. Final Cut uses the same keyboard functions as AVID system which every Pro Editor ends up using at Post facilities.
Thank you, for the responses. She has both a Mac (older all in one) and Windows laptop now. I like Mac, but they are expensive for everything...I will have to get her Final Cut and see what she can do with it. You're right, Dan, the apps kill you for everything regardless if it's Mac or Windows, hopefully, she will spend her money wisely and listen to what y'all have to say and not the latest trends that everyone else her age seems to follow.
