What makes a character truly iconic? Is it the big events that unfold around them or the little things that make them stand apart? How would you describe one of your characters as iconic? There are quite a few in current and past cinema. I think the most current one is Dominic from The Fast and The Furious franchise just because for him family always comes first. One of my characters could be classified as such since she's all about giving back and loyalty.

I think an iconic character has layers, a strongly written personality and can surprise you.

Characters that become iconic could be based on several factors. First, a combination of good writing, second, good acting and third, establishing well defined characters. Dirty Harry is a good example. From the moment he uttered the immortal words, “Do you feel lucky punk”, this character resonated with the American public. In “Apocalypse Now”, the character of Colonel Bill Kilgore also uttered some unforgettable lines like “Charlie don’t surf” and “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”. Chief Brody saying “We’re gonna need a bigger boat” is another memorable line. So as a writer, I aspire to create dialogue that may one day make one of my characters iconic. or me, it’s based less on events and characteristics and more on creating memorable dialogue.

@Phillip, I can't think of a single line that's more iconic the Dirty Harry's "Do you feel lucky punk? Well do you?" I find it interesting a show I used to watch Dark Angel, Max would talk about how she has to blaze and since then I heard that word use in so many different formats. The only standout phrase I threw in my current script was a bit of fun for a minor character. Although the main characters do have nicknames for each other that could stick if a studio scoops it up and an amazing star portrays them.
Billy: I thought of this scene after my last post. A scene featuring one of the most iconic actors in history. If offers some great lines and action delivered beautifully. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-cPWheNyaA&list=PLDIddvD0SvoJBktdcdiex3....

True Grit was the only remake of a John Wayne movie that I liked. Used to love watching his movies.
