Screenwriting : Voice over and scene description by Antonio James Casci

Voice over and scene description

My question is while writing a scene where a character is reading a story book and then it cuts to a scene with their voice over it. Do you as the writer write out whats going on in the story book scene along with what the character is saying? or continue on with their narrative? For example the character doing the voice overs says "Then the old man ran down the hill" and then you write the action: An old man runs down a hill. I know it's a simple minded question with a simple answer, but it would clear up alot! Thanks!

I think you have to put anything you want the character (ultimately the actor) to do in action lines. Down the road in production, the director needs to know what you were seeing when you wrote the scene, not what the character was telling him you were seeing. That being said, I think the trick is to give your book reader/VO character dialog which accentuates what's happening on screen, instead of parroting whats happening on screen. Otherwise you're risking boring the reader and ultimately the audience. Ex: NARRATOR (V.O.) He was a simple farmboy and she was a princess. Their love could never be acknowledged. Ext. Farmhouse near base of castle Farmboy absently milks a cow while gazing longingly at the castle. Princess looks down from a window, then turns away pretending not to see him
