What's the difference between a Fan Script and a Spec script?

I am curious to see people's reponces on this one.

Norman Welthagen

Fan script would be a screenplay about a loved property you will never be able to sell or own the rights to. ALA fan film. A spec is a screenplay written with zero money upfront. You can also write an adaptation or even get an assignment on spec. Specs also double up as examples of your writing.

Daniel L. Noe

A fan script is a hybrid transcript of a blend of a screenplay and the views of the fan who watched it. A spec, (speculative), script is a full feature length original story. Writing on "Spec" means one writes original screenplays in the hopes a reader will engage them. Fan scripts become after the movie and spec scripts come before the movie. that help out Patrick? cheers!

Norman Welthagen

Hey Daniel. A spec is not always an original. If you adapt a novel in the public domain in the hopes of selling it, you are still considered to be working on spec.

Patrick "pH" Hampton

As a tv writer I like to consider my specs also fan scripts because most if them I write I am a huge fan of the show.

Daniel L. Noe

True that Norman. My bad. Cheers!
