New Mexico Actors Marketing Minute: Getting Seen On Screen Hi, I’m Shelley Carney with New Mexico Actors. How do you get started acting on camera? Here are my top five tips for getting seen on-screen. 1) Take a class. Find a class that offers you the chance to practice acting on camera. There are great classes available at the community college or through local acting schools. 2) Student films. Contact the students and teachers of filmmaking classes at your local college or university. Offer to act in scenes or short films and leave them with your headshot and contact information. 3) Independent films. Attend local film festivals and screenings, including filmmaking competitions like the 48 Hour Film Project, and get to know the filmmakers. Offer to act and help however you can with the making of their next film. 4) Background acting. While it is against the odds that you will be pulled from the background to be featured in a speaking role, you will have the opportunity to be on a professional set and learn through observation. 5) Produce content. As you meet people in the industry, you can find friends with editing experience and camera equipment. Put together a team, and create your own content. Take advantage of every opportunity to network and to act, and soon you will see yourself on screen. I’m Shelley Carney with New Mexico Actors: Lighting the Highway to Hollywood.
