The choice to go with digital or film is usually a budgetary and or aesthetic choice. Some directors prefer the look of film. Most producers prefer the cost savings of digital. It's a tug of war between those two concerns generally. Pick up American Cinematographer Magazine and you'll find valuable discussions and interviews with DP's describing reasons for using both.
