I just read a stack of them for the book I'm working on. Chapter I'm currently writing is on how the Industrial Revolution lead to the USA Women's Rights Movement in 1910, and how the new motion picture business parallels that women's movement and the 19th Amendment (passed in 1920). Don't know if this is in that article, but the first fiction film was made by a woman: Alice Guy Blache, who was an executive secretary at Gaumont, and asked if she could test a new motion picture camera. She ended up head of production for Gaumont! (Happy International Woman's Day!)

If I recall correctly, it's been a few years since I read the article about women screenwriters, I believe initially the film industry wasn't really taken that seriously until it began to make enough serious money to draw the attention of white, male businessmen. And that was the end of this rather unique time in history. It's sad, isn't it--- that there isn't the diversity there should be?
