Anything Goes : Why, Tomorrowland, Why? by Ann Kimbrough

Why, Tomorrowland, Why?

I really wanted to like this movie, because it's not part of a franchise or a comic book or a remake. Of course, it's not due to a spec sale, but unfortunately it is an original screenplay. I say unfortunately, because its failure at the box office hurts all interest in original screenplays. What it should hurt is poor screenwriting. Tomorrowland has a fantastic beginning hook -- pretty much everything you see in the movie's trailer -- and then the plot takes a wicked turn into confusion, ridiculous reasoning and an illogical backstory that still baffles me. It looked so bad on screen, you really can't image the talented people involved thought it ever made sense on paper. BOTTOMLINE: it proves that Hollywood studios know how to remake films, but have lost the skill to create films. Perhaps they'll open their doors a little wider and hire some of the talent we see here at Stage 32. 'A good story told well'... alas, it's not the path Tomorrowland took.
