Screenwriting : Formatting a montage by Robert Fischer

Formatting a montage

How does one format a V.O. a montage? Is this even advisable?

Jean-Pierre Chapoteau

You start with "Montage" and then put in bullet points, write the action and then dialogue. Like this. MONTAGE: - Jason walks up the stairs in his home. DIALOGUE - Jason strolls between decrepit graves in an old cemetery. DIALOGUE - Jason leans against in his car in a weed infested field and lights a cigarette. DIALOGUE No need to put slug after slug because that would waste a ton of space. As long as the reader clearly sees where you're coming from, it will be fine.

Jean-Pierre Chapoteau

Well the bullet points are dashes "-". But Stage32 converted them.

Ooh, nice link CJ. I would check out the last example, Robert.

Thank you so much for the information. It is helpful.

What if I wanted to narrate during a montage, like reciting the Gettysburg Address ?

Regina Lee

If you can, look at the top of American Beauty. It's "montage-y" with VO, though it's not an archetypical montage.
