Screenwriting : Writing Sequels by Mike Norman

Writing Sequels

What are the potential issues for writing a sequel to an existing movie franchise? I have an idea for a story that would play well as a sequel to an existing movie franchise. The last sequel in the franchise was released in 2005. The original movie was based on a graphic novel. Is it okay to write it but give credit to the original book author with a ""Based on..." credit on the cover page?

Anthony Cawood

Afraid that you don't own the rights to the material so you can't write a sequel and hope to sell it, you'd just get sued.

Mike Norman

Kind of what I had figured.

Shawn Speake

Make the idea like a James Bay song and "Let it Go"

Mike Norman

I'm going to take my concept and create a new story.

William Martell

The copyright owners can't hear your pitch for legal reasons, but if you already have a script they can still sue the heck out of you. Copyright has nothing to do with making money and everything to do with the right to copy (characters, stories, etc) and writing the script without those rights can get you in trouble.

Mike Norman

Not concerned with that. I didn't put anything on paper. It was just a concept.
