Success Stories: SEP'4 Career counselors?

Douglas L. Saunders

Career counselors?

My daughter is interested in meeting with a career counselor that has a focus on the film industry. She's looking for feedback on her résumé, feedback on her approach in finding jobs. She's currently in the SF Bay Area, working for a documentary studio in SF, but would be happy to do this online/by phone with the right person/firm. She just graduated in Film Production from the University of British Columbia, and work permit eligible there for another 18 months, but is an American citizen. Any suggestions?

to be honest, it's really about who you know in the film biz. Or a degree from USC. Get a job that offers health benefits. I think MTV & HBO offer benefits. the big talent agencies have Agent Training programs. All the movie shoots/productions are freelance jobs and each trade has a Union (Gaffers, Teamsters, Editors, Camera, Actors, )

I disagree wholeheartedly. I moved to Los Angeles from Jackson, MS, and I knew one person in LA - my college friend who was interning at Artisan. I've never hired an assistant through any type of nepotism. It's not about "who you know" if you are willing to intern and take an entry-level job.

As Regina said, there are jobs out there for starting out in certain parts of the industry (agencies, management firms, even the occasional prod co), but you'll be startin' small. Like mail room small. It's tough, but it's a way in!
