Hello everyone! Does anyone have experience of adapting a film for the stage in terms of what the appropriate contract/terms might be used, and how copyright works on the adapted script? I've watched a film and it was really inspirational. I've also seen this topic in a theatre show recently. I would like to know about the process such as the copyright works, how to contact to the scriptwriter or the producer. I have really no idea about the process, so any information will be appreciated. Thank you all.

First you will need what is called the grant of primary rights: The exclusive option to develop, finance, produce and exploit the live stage production. As an example the first option period is normally for 12 to 18 months and cost from a low of $10,000 for a lesser known work to above $100,000 for a known work. You will likely need much longer to finish the play and get it produced so a contract will need to include extension agreements. That's just the tip; there are many other issues that will need to be addressed like royalties, additional and subsidiary rights, credit or billing, expenses and agency clause. I suspect you will need a lawyer to contact the copyright owner. The copyright may be owned by several entities.
