Wowza, what a two weeks this has been! I'm just back to Beijing after a weekend in Hong Kong for the Handover, was in Shanghai the week before that for the festival and market, and haven't had any time to update here...so here's a few new things! My guest two weeks ago was in-demand WGA screenwriter and producer Steve Barr, a Los Angeles transplant to New Zealand who also works in China a lot. It's a very candid conversation and there is lots to learn and enjoy regardless of your experience level.
Steve shares his perspective as a very busy working writer-producer with credits ranging from the two very different film industries in L.A. (the studio industry proper and the independent world), where he lived 16 years; from New Zealand, his home of the last 8; plus now China, where he has worked and travelled extensively over the last 4.
Steve is also the guy that MY company hired to write our epic historical film Oracle, coming in 2019, so he and I are able to really dig into the development process on that project; for writers who are as of yet unproduced, the dialogue Steve and I have as writer and producer offers a detailed example of how deals like this come together, and shares lots of insights into how the development and creative process works in a cross-cultural environment like China-Hollywood.
