3 art structure of screenwritting

how to break this 3 art structure and still make a blockbuster?

Pierre Langenegger

What's the 3 art structure?

Alex Templeton

I think three ACT was meant.

Pierre Langenegger

I assumed so as well but he did write "art" twice so it wasn't a typo.

Alex Templeton

Hey, its hard to writt good.

Craig D Griffiths

I'll assume autocorrect got us Art, let's move on.

The 3 acts are just Start, Middle and End. The middle tends to be more interesting that the setup (start) and the finish (end) so it is traditionally twice as long.

20 page first act, 40 page second and 20 page third. There are plenty of sub- formulas. Cats to be saved, journeys taken by heroes etc. I just focus on story.

Blockbuster, is hard no matter what. It's like trying to write a hit song. Different is better.

Remember great writing wins.

Its simple, First know them, then learn them, then master them with perfection and after that you will automatically become able to break any rule you want. And then only you will develop your own unique style of story telling, may it be written ,visual or for edit.

If making blockbusters were easy, there wouldn't be any movie flops to criticize, zero opportunity to apply for writing assignments, studios & Bosses would keep hiring the same filmmakers & Writers.

Pray for more flops! Movie flops & bad TV shows mean more opportunities to break in, new storytellers.

David Downes

Dan, love the comment! Putting my old MBA hat on, if the market isn't serving a segment or not serving a segment well, there is opportunity.

Dan MaxXx

No pity , Sir. Everybody is an expert on writing forums but the people with writing jobs and Execs with yearly salaries keep on working and making movies.

Pick a structure and crush it. Makes 0 sense to whine when you're not in the business.

Doug Nelson

For those within the golden circle, the operative concept is to keep the riff-raff out, while those on the outside are desperately trying to claw their way in. I wonder how many even have a clue as to what it takes to make a "blockbuster". (Hint: It's a lot more than just pixie dust.)

I believe Sushanth is asking about OTHER structures, other than three act. And asking... if creating a structure that differs from three act, is it still possible to create a film that performs well? The answer: It depends. Lol! It depends on specific context and a whole lot of factors—which we have none here for a productive discussion. ;) Sushanth, is there a specific type of film or an example to share to give some context? Are you talking about experimental film? Non-linear? Both can fall under three act... And of course many three act films can be theorized as to having more than three acts. The usual films that often come up as having "different" structures are Memento and Pulp Fiction. Both did well with critics and audiences. Anyway, I don't know if you wish to dive into film theory or not?—my guess is not. Rather you are asking if "different" can be "successful." And, sure, anything is possible. But again, it depends. ;)

What is a blockbuster movie? Is it ok to write a screenplay for a blockbuster movie?

D Marcus

In general a "blockbuster" is a movie with wide audience appeal. The term (as it relates to movies) also means a finished movie that makes a lot of money - so a "small" movie can become a blockbuster. Yes, it is okay to write a screenplay that might appeal to a wide audience.
