Cinematography : An Interview with Roger Deakins by Geoff Hall

An Interview with Roger Deakins

Here’s an interview with one of my favourite DoP’s Roger Deakins. It was great to see him finally get an Oscar for his work after 13 previous attempts! It obviously pays to keep going. I find his work captivating, although Deakins’ would probably then say I was noticing his work too much, but hey nowadays we can binge watch his work and be in awe of his talent. After all, this is visual storytelling and I’d hate to think that we could ignore his work. https://youtu.be/ZUg1j3NT3i4

Thanks for posting this Geoff. I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with him a number of times. His charm, subtle humour, and humanity leave an even bigger impression than his genius.

His understated comments about trying new things should be internalized by everyone. Not just that he is not absolutely sure something will work, but regardless of a vast catalog of things he has at his fingertips that he has done before, he is trying something new. Those memories are revealed in his smile. A lesson from a master.

One of my favorite DPs... along with John Toll too
