Producing : Optioning Material by Jason Mirch

Optioning Material

Hi Producers! Who here has optioned material in the past? If so, what have you optioned and what have you developed out of the material? Love to hear some success stories, some projects that didn't pan out (and why), and even some stories that are still in the works!

For my part, I optioned a New York Times best seller and worked to turn it into a feature film. It's a baseball project, which are always tough to do. But the story is fantastic!

You're asking Producers: Years ago; I've been known to buy a few options directly from writers - all to no avail. I give 'em money but they can't/won't provide a usable script. Or they simply disappear with my money. I may be a slow learner (maybe just optimistic) but I do evently catch on. My take away - don't do that again.

Google Translate: I have a scenario where women can sell you on the humiliation. This is my graduate project.

I optioned a Sci-Fi novel "Sigmet Active" from the author and have teamed with a talented new writer to co-write the pilot for a series called "SkyFire." The logline is up on Stage 32. I have been on the hunt for an agent or manager to get it in front of the right people (producers or prodco's). After querying 60 I have gotten one read. So I am going in a new direction - entered into 7 highly ranked screenplay competitions. The first time out the script reached Semi-finalist in Screencraft Pilot Competition. Also starting to contact entertainment law firms that package...like Brandon Blake of Stage 32. Paying their fee may be about equal to paying for pitches and contests. We'll see!

Dan M; ballpark figures today range from $0 to $1.

In my case, my author has written half a dozen novels and I felt that a no-money option was a little demeaning, or that I wasn't really serious. So I paid $200 upon signing a one-year option, and $1300 payable at the end of the year --if I continued the option. Which I did.
