Screenwriting : See-saw. by Jeff Caldwell

See-saw.

Anybody go back and forth with how they feel about their work? Some days I feel like my pieces are really good, then other days I feel like they're the worst pieces of crap ever written. I think that's probably normal for writers. Well, I hope anyway..

Jeff Caldwell

Dan - yeah I know I've definitely gotten way better than when I started. I thought they were great back then and looking back they were very bad. Nowadays, I think it's more of a getting in your own head thing for me. I can be over-analytical to a fault with everything really. I try to just stop thinking about it and move on. I know Stephen King's wife famously picked the manuscript for Carrie out of their garbage can. Imagine she didn't..

Jeff Caldwell

Not comparing myself to him or anything. That's just basically an example of how I feel sometimes lol

Logan Palmer

I get that feeling a lot! Sometimes I feel like I need affirmation from film festivals or competitions just to reassure me that my piece isn't crap. It is a bad habit but I think the confidence will come with experience. Eventually both of us will come to the realization that we know good writing when we see it (or write it)

Phil Clarke

Absolutely normal. Such self-doubt is the burden we must bear and learn to manage. It should pass. If it doesn't, have a closer look at why you think your work isn't your best.

Frankie Gaddo

Not with my completed works. But my works in progress, yes. I go from thinking I'm creating the greatest thing ever to thinking what I'm working on is utterly terrible, questioning myself on how I could have spent so long on something that seems to lack so much. See-saw is right.

Jeff Caldwell

Yeah Frank you're right usually when I feel that way about a completed work I can reread it and I'll feel better. It's a lot worse with unfinished products.

Kelvin Martians

It gets weird atimes, but you will always have that gut feeling after reading your work. Either crappy or awesome. Also

You might need someone else close to you to have a read and then give you their take on it.

Imo Wimana Chadband

I was just going through this feeling this week. Especially being one of the new comers in the industry, I find myself at times doubting my work because I don't yet have that track record and i.m still learning and developing you know. It's normal. I believe over time as you progress you become more confident in your work and the feeling wouldn't be as overwhelming.
