Screenwriting : Too Many pages by Phil Mitchell

Too Many pages

I have just added some 60+ pages to a book I wrote 3 years ago. The only trouble with that is, if I transfer those pages into the already written film-script of the book, I will end up with a 250 page script. And as far as I know that's an unacceptable number of pages. If only my name was Tarantino I would be allowed to put forward as many pages as I wanted.

this is a terrible take on your own writing. Perhaps your books & scripts are not as good as you think they are? How are your book sales?

BTW, Tarantino was a nobody who sold 2 spec scripts to two corporations and wrote/directed a low-budget $1M movie which became the highest grossing Indie movie all-time. And he was still turned away for "Pulp Fiction" funding.

Lindbergh E Hollingsworth

You're a writer so deliver a 120 page script. That's your job.

Thanks for all your suggestions and support.

William Martell

Cut it to 110 pages. Just do it.

PS: The average professional screenwriter wrote 9 scripts before making a cent, so if this is your first script know that you probably have 8 more to write.

Phil Mitchell

Thanks William, that was actually my first script, I have written three more since then. It just seems like there's so much that is being left out from what I think would be a "much better story." 5 more to go a Bill?

Phil, I would go back to the outline stage first -- are there subplots or beats you could do without, combine, etc. so when it's fleshed out it's going to be a reasonable length. Then, and only then, look to trim the fat off the remaining scenes. More advice via my site IsMyScreenplayCrap.com

I just love that name: IsMyScreenplayCrap.com (Probably) Haha
