Screenwriting : Pilot Question by Todd Sorrell

Pilot Question

Could someone tell me what a "Short Form Pilot" is? I'm only familiar with the half-hour and hour pilot.

Bill Costantini

Hi Todd,

It's the introductory episode of a short form show. Most of the short form shows that I have seen are between five and maybe 12 minutes.

Screencraft is doing a TV Pilot Competition now, and the requirement for the Short Form Pilot script length is between 5 - 20 pages. That shows you how wide-ranging the Short-Form world can be.

Some of my favorites include State of the Union on Sundance, which was created by Nick Hornby, directed by Stephen Frears, and stars Rosamund Pike and Chris O'Dowd. Two Guys Who Hate Each Other is hilarious, and can be found on Youtube, Funny or Die, and elsewhere. Issa Rae got her start with her great short content series The Adventures of an Awkward Black Girl. And Aeon Flux and Beavis and Butthead both started as short form concepts on MTV back in the day.

Hope this helps.

Best fortunes in your creative endeavors, Todd, and stay safe!
