Filmmaking / Directing : Virtual production by Ian Buchanan

Virtual production

Hey everyone. I’m beginning my due diligence for my project with regards to budgeting etc. It’s my hope to do the bulk of filing on a virtual set, similar to the Volume used for the Mandalorian production. Does anyone have any experience with this - tips or pitfalls?

Adrian Vershinin

Love to be looped into this conversation when you hear back Ian. Doing similar.

I know some VFX crew on Mandalorian. Budget $8 - $12M per episode to recreate something similar.

It's not necessarily a budget-friendly approach. The Mandalorian cost ~$15m per episode ($120m for the first season). To do it inexpensively, you should have a very serious discussion with experienced director-producer-cinematographer and VFX people who have gone through the process AND have produced what you think are acceptable results. In many films, even mainstream films, overall production design isn't something that has to be done for each and every scene in advance. It's often a work-in-progress based on an assigned budget per scene. But for something that is majorly done in virtual production, all those decisions really have to be moved up and set in stone much earlier. Because many of them affect budget drastically. Such things as rendering time per frame and capabilities of particular software must dovetail with your intended look. Further, it's not an easy point and shoot camera set up. Angles must be matched between shots, and between takes, which means you likely need robot-controlled cameras...

Thanks @shadow for your input. My plan to use a virtual set is based upon a larger strategy to utilise a fully realised city constructed in the unreal engine which will then be used for a video game production relating to the project.
