Sell a TV pilot when you don't know anybody

Hi folks!

I finally finished my first TV pilot (sci-fi/horror) after lots of rewrites. I submitted it a few weeks ago for first 10-page coverage here on Stage 32 but haven't heard back yet.

I know this question has been asked many times but I can't really find an "actionable" answer.

How do you sell a TV pilot when you live in Europe and don't know anyone in film production? I heard of a service that sends your script to producers in exchange for a fee but couldn't find it anywhere. I also submitted it to competitions.

Should I cold email producers on imdb? Use a service? Find a manager? All of the above?

Thanks!!

Nick Brown

I think you could argue that writing it is the easy part! I'm in the UK. I have an agent and I've had stuff optioned but it's very hard to get over the line. I've found LinkedIn very useful in 'cold calling' people though it's a numbers game. IMDB pro is also very useful, though quite pricey. Certainly don't be afraid to go for individuals but obviously target those who might go for your genre. I've had some success with 'paid listing sites' like Inktip and the Blacklist but, again, costs mount up. All the best!

Get yourself in the mix. There is a lot of television production in Paris. Volunteer your time as a PA, maybe an 'office girl' - whatever! I know nothing about the French Writer's Rooms but I do have some understanding about US Writer's Rooms - it ain't glamorous.

Right here. Under script services there's an option for a script read with a exec that specifically says "This Service is For You If You don’t know anyone in the industry and would like the opportunity to meet someone at the heart of it all." hahaha. Which is, uhm, weird but still. I guess it fits? Now whether they could actually offer a shopping agreement? You can't find a service for that. You have to just have a script someone wants. You can pay for a service to get it in front of people. Just has to be the right person at the right time.

I have a lot of TV pilots to sell and I don't know a soul

Thank you all for the answers! It's really helpful :)

It wouldn't hurt to send out query letters to managers. It's a somewhat dying practice, but it's worth a shot.
